ABOUT ME

A collaborative relationship
built on respect and curiosity.

David Hopkins, Integrative Transactional Analysis psychotherapist

I am a UKCP registered Trainee Therapist, having completed my foundation training at the Metanoia Institute. I am now completing my advanced training at the Berne Institute.

My work is rooted in the profound belief that every person carries within them the capacity for change, that healing is possible and we don't have to be defined by our past.

My practice integrates classical Transactional Analysis with contemporary relational, attachment-informed, and body-based approaches. This allows us to work with both the deeper emotional and relational experiences and patterns of behaviour that have previously helped to keep you to feel safe but may now be holding you back from expressing your true self.

In-person Therapy
A collaborative space for adults to explore their patterns, deepen self-understanding, and move towards greater freedom in how they live and relate. Work that respects your intelligence and your own pace of change.
Online Therapy
The same thoughtful, relational work delivered from wherever you are in the UK. A flexible option that offers the same depth and presence as in-person sessions when distance, schedule or preference makes that easier.
THE MODALITY I PRACTICE

Integrative Transactional Analysis

A respectful and deeply human approach to psychotherapy that honours your capacity for change.

The Foundations

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a clear, practical way of making sense of how we think, feel, and relate to others. It helps us notice the patterns we learned growing up, the ways we talk and listen, and the stories we carry about ourselves and the world. Importantly, it does this without treating you as broken or reduced to a diagnosis.

In sessions we might explore questions such as: How do I protect myself? What do I expect from others? What happens when I feel criticised, close, or under pressure? The aim is greater choice in how you respond, not to fit you into a theory.

The Integrative Difference

Integrative work means I do not rely on one narrow method. Alongside TA, I draw on ideas about relationships and trust, how early bonds shape later life, and how the body holds stress and emotion. I also keep trauma sensitivity in mind, so we move at a pace that feels safe enough.

In practice, that means we can pay attention to what you think and feel, what happens between us in the room, and how experience shows up physically. We work with the whole of you: mind, body, and the ways you connect with others.

WHY CLIENTS CHOOSE ITA
Clarity without blame
We work towards understanding your patterns as ways you learned to cope and stay safe, not as personal failings.
Equal relationship
You are met as a capable equal from the first session. Therapy is collaborative, not hierarchical.
Lasting change
We don't work to ease surface symptoms but with deeper patterns and beliefs that keep difficulties repeating.
MY PRACTICE

Kingston & Surbiton Centre

The Kingston & Surbiton Centre is the name of my registered company. I work primarily out of a dedicated therapy room in Surbiton, although I also offer space in Kingston depending on demand. Kingston locations may vary. However, where possible, I attempt to secure a familiar space for our work together.

I mainly work at weekends but do offer limited evening sessions during the week, depending on availability. When I am not able to offer an in-person session on a weekend, I will normally be able to offer alternative availability for our session. If we do decide to work together I will advertise my availability to you in advance.

MY CORE BELIEF

Mental wellbeing is achievable.

"I'm OK, You're OK" is not a slogan. It is a position we can consciously choose to live from.
Okness
Understanding that fundamentally we are ok and so is everyone else allows us to give pause to judgement of ourselves and others.
Autonomy
Growing freer to notice what you feel, choose how you respond, and form closer, more genuine connections with others.
Relationship
Healing occurs in the quality of the therapeutic relationship itself. You are met as an equal, not as an object of treatment.
Empowerment
We work to strengthen your belief in yourself that you can set and hold your own boundaries, helping to facilitate healthy relationships with yourself and others.
WHAT TO EXPECT

A space that honours your intelligence and your story.

Although the modality I generally work within is Transactional Analysis, we will work with what fits best for you and your goals.

Not everyone wants or needs to make fundamental changes in their life although that certainly is possible. Some may be coming to therapy to work through specific issues, challenges or life events. Therapy and the therapeutic experience is different for everyone but together we can work towards achieving your goals.

Discovery & Safety
We spend time understanding what brings you to therapy and building the trust necessary for deeper work.
Mapping Your Script
We explore with you the early decisions and survival strategies that once protected you but may now limit you.
Redecision & Integration
Using TA techniques alongside relational presence, you make new decisions in the here-and-now.
Living Your Okness
The work moves from insight into new ways of being in relationship with yourself and others.
FEES & AVAILABILITY

Transparent fees.

I believe in financial clarity as part of a respectful therapeutic relationship. I also hold a small number of reduced-rate places.
